BRODHEAD - Bluff View, a former dance hall in Brodhead off of Wisconsin 11, was completely destroyed by a fire that ignited Tuesday evening.
The former dance hall, used for storage before the fire, had been a meeting place for community members for fish fries and weddings, as well as a drinking establishment.
Brodhead Fire Chief Rob Scheidegger said the structure was a total loss but did not have an estimate of the damages. Two cars and a lawnmower stored in the building were also destroyed. The fire began by undetermined means at about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and was quelled before 12:30 a.m. Scheidegger said there was still some hay smoldering when the fire department cleared, which was not a cause for concern.
A Mutual Aid Box Alarm System call was extended to 12 other fire departments in Green and Rock counties as well as northern Illinois.
Scheidegger said the former bar was owned by a family that lived in a house close by, but the fire did not spread to anything besides a few hay bales.
Two to three horses outside the structure were safely taken away from the fire.
Up until about 15 years ago, Bluff View used to be one of the "main hot spots" in town where people would socialize, Scheidegger said.
"It has been there as long as I have been born, so like forever," he said.
