MONROE - Governor Jim Doyle announced Thursday that Green County and five other counties will receive assistance from the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Emergency Assistance Program (EAP) to help in the recovery and rehabilitation of homes damaged by the severe flooding last August.

Green County will receive $275,000 from the Community Development Block Grant.

Green County Emergency Management project manager Tanna McKeon said people must have applied with FEMA prior to receiving funds from the grant.

Eligibility of Green County applicants will be dependent upon income, and McKeon said such things as large, recurring medical expenses will be considered in the determination.

McKeon said applicants who have small business loans may be able to use the grant money to pay off those loans.

"I know interest rates on these loans are quite low, but when you are in an emergency situation, it helps," McKeon said.

The August 2007 storms and floods destroyed property, but Wisconsin communities have pulled together, ensured the safety of one another, and started the difficult road of rebuilding their lives.

"I am pleased to announce over $3 million in emergency funding to these counties to help deal with the devastation left behind by the terrible flooding in August," Doyle said.

The other counties receiving grants are: Crawford ($216,700), Kenosha ($300,000), La Crosse ($380,000), Richland ($632,500) and Vernon ($500,000). The Village of Chaseburg (Vernon County) will receive $377,000, and the Village of Gays Mills (Crawford County) will receive $459,900.

The grants are awarded to cities, towns and villages with populations less than 50,000 and for the primary use by low- and moderate-income residents. The grants provide funds to address housing needs that occur as a direct result of natural or manmade disasters.

McKeon said no families in Green County will need to be relocated because of risk of future flooding.

Green County applicants may call the Green County Emergency Management office at 328-9416 and speak with McKeon or director Keith Ingwell for more information.
