MONROE - Dangerously cold weather is moving into the area, with wind chills expected to reach as low as -50 degrees Monday, Jan. 6.
A wind chill advisory went into effect Thursday, Jan. 2 and will continue until 10 a.m. today, Jan. 3. Wind chills values as low as -30 degrees were expected. Today's high is expected to reach 12 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
Saturday, Jan. 4 will be relatively warm, with a high of 29 and a low of 2 degrees expected. Snow is also possible on Saturday.
The really deep freeze is scheduled to move into the area Sunday, Jan. 5: The NWS reports dangerous wind chills between -35 and -50 are expected Sunday night and continuing through Tuesday, Jan. 7.
Actual temperatures are expected to range from a low of -17 Sunday night to -21 Monday night and -11 Tuesday night; highs on Sunday will be about 6 degrees, while the high on Monday is expected to be -12. The high Tuesday will be about -5.
Temperatures this low are potentially life-threatening and haven't been seen in this area since 1996, according to the Department of Military Affairs.
The weather outlook greatly improves Wednesday, Jan. 8 when the high is forecast to be 13 with a low of 7. The high Thursday, Jan. 9 will be near 25 degrees.
