MONROE - Monroe Board of Public Works gave City Engineer Supervisor Al Gerber authorization Monday to seek bids immediately for two projects involved with widening of 8th and 9th streets.

Gerber said work on the water and sanitary sewer reconstruction from Kwik Trip, near 11th Avenue to 20th Avenue, will be begin in early March and last about four to six weeks.

The timing of the water and sewer work will let the city begin widening the streets in April, Gerber said.

The 8th/9th street widening project, will be done in conjunction with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

Gerber told board members the "substantial" completion date is expected to be in early September.

Alderman Mark Coplien said he would like to see the work completed by the end of August. Other board members agreed.

Cheese Days 2010 is set for the weekend of Sept. 25.

The street reconstruction will include widening the streets by four feet on each side, replacing the Badger State Trail overpass, and rebuilding sidewalks. Utility poles along the route also will be relocated.

While the street is open, the water and wastewater utility lines will be replaced and updated, which are among the oldest in the city.

Engineering plans at City Hall show the street is to remain a two-lane, two-way street. Some corner curbs are to be set back to allow for easier turning. Plans also show 9th Street being closed at the corner of 11th Avenue near Kwik Trip.

The Board of Public Works voted unanimously Jan. 5, 2009, to go forward on 8th/9th street reconstruction with a state grant supplying about 80 percent of the $4.5 million cost. The grant is based on the state's recommendation that land be acquired and the street widened for safety.

Council and the Finance and Taxation committee will be considering the city's bonding options in early February.

Council authorized the plans for reconstruction Jan 5, 2009, starting with property acquisition along the route. It approved the last parcel acquisitions Dec. 15.

Plans for the project are on display in the Common Council chamber at the City Hall.
