Laci Westgard, the executive director of public affairs at the Green County Humane Society, talks about her best friend, Asher, a 9-month-old boxer.

Westgard got Asher from a breeder in Dyersville, Iowa. She wanted a boxer because her previous dog was a boxer and has known the breed to be good with kids.

Asher was named by Westgard's 7-year-old daughter, Elicia.

Describe Asher's personality.

He is full of energy. He's very hyper, very playful, loves playing fetch. He loves to play on the playset we have for the kids. He'll climb up it and play with them. He loves being outside as long as we're out there with him. He does get cuddly when he wants to, when he's done playing.

What do you and Asher like to do together?

He goes to work with me some days. He loves all of the staff there so he gets really excited. He doesn't like being kept in my office by himself though. We play outside, and we play inside. He likes to go for rides, and he's got a couple of dog friends at our friends' house that he loves to play with.

What has it been like having Asher in your life?

It's been wonderful. We lost our other boxer, Payton, in October of last year. Although (Asher) doesn't replace him, he has helped us not have such a quiet household. You forget what it's like to not have a dog and you realize it's so quiet. He's helped fill that void. There's never a dull moment, whether it's stealing Elicia's toys or her socks or her shoes.
