Best Friends

Best Friends is a weekly feature highlighting local residents and their pets. To suggest someone for the series, contact Shari Rampenthal, assistant editor, at srampenthal@themonroetimes.com

Dee Olson, a board member of the Green County Humane Society, has two best friends, 2-year-old Jack Russell terriers Bami and Brighton.

After seeing Jack Russell terriers in a Sports Illustrated magazine about 25 years ago, Olson fell in love with the breed. Bami and Brighton are her fourth and fifth Jack Russell terriers. She had originally wanted to get just one puppy from a breeder in Elgin, Illinois, but when she went to pick up Bami, Brighton had just been returned because the people who had taken her changed their minds. Olson took this as a sign she was supposed to have both of them.

Bami got her name after Olson watched a documentary about the Roosevelts and one of their relatives, Bami, seemed like an interesting character. Brighton is named after a town in England in honor of the breed's heritage.

Describe your dogs' personalities.

Bami is full of feistiness and will give a growl if there's something she is not happy about. Brighton is much more friendly and easy-going.

They're friendly, loyal, smart, and they get me off the couch. Neither like riding in the car, which is unlike any other dogs I've had.

What do you like to do together?

We like to eat and sleep, and being outdoors. They have a fenced-in yard (just off the Monroe Country Club) and during the winter when no one's golfing they like to chase rabbits and squirrels by the Monroe Country Club. They like their treats and toys and to play ball and lay out in the sun. They're good friends. A lot of times they lay together in the front window and watch the world go by.

What has been the best part of having them in your life?

The companionship for sure. You talk to them like you would a person. They just add such a spirit to your house. I just think a house without a dog seems so lifeless. Something neat about dogs is they're an instant way to meet people. I've always been a dog lover. Growing up, I would always go around and say hi to all the neighborhood dogs. I got involved with the (humane society) board after I had started volunteering walking dogs. Dogs get you involved in life.
