Benefit specialist works with seniors

MONROE - Elder Benefit Specialists can be found in every county and tribe in Wisconsin, working with residents 60 years of age and older, regardless of financial status. There is no charge for services; however donations can be made toward the cost of the service.

Elder Benefit Specialists can help with: Medicare, Medicare Supplemental Insurance and Advantage Plans; senior care and Medicare Part D; Social Security and Supplemental Security Income; Medical Assistance and Low Income Subsidy Programs (QMB, SLMB, SLMB-Plus); Foodshare (food stamps) and Energy Assistance; and other legal, benefit and consumer problems.

Anyone 60 years of age or older should use the service if they are having a problem in securing a public or private benefit; want to know more about any benefits; need help with paperwork for benefits applications; have been denied a benefit that they think they may be entitled to receive; want to apply for Medical Assistance, Low Income Subsidy Programs, Foodshare or Energy Assistance; or have other legal, benefit or consumer problems.

All files and correspondence are kept locked, and conversations with the Benefit Specialist are confidential.

The elder benefit specialist in Green County is Linda Gallagher. Her main office is part of the Aging and Disability Resource Center in the Government Services Building, Pleasant View Complex, N3152 Wisconsin 81, Monroe. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Gallagher can be reached at 608-328-9366.

She also is available monthly in the following communities: Monroe, first Monday of the month from 11 a.m. to noon at the Behring Senior Center; Albany, first Wednesday from 12:30 to 1 p.m. at Village Hall and from 1:15 to 2 p.m. at Riverview Apartments; Juda, first Thursday from noon to 1 p.m. at the Juda Community Building; Monticello, second Monday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Monticello Public Library; New Glarus, second Monday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the New Glarus Dining Center, located in the New Glarus Home; and Brodhead, second Wednesday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Brodhead City Hall.

Gallagher will be at Brodhead City Hall from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.
