DARLINGTON - A Belmont man released from jail less than a week earlier on a $2,000 cash bond for his eighth drunk driving charge was arrested Monday for felony bail jumping.

Douglas E. Popp, 52, was jailed after a deputy responded at 9:44 p.m. Monday to a report of a suspicious person on West Mound View Avenue in Belmont, according to the Lafayette County Sheriff's Office.

Popp has six drunk driving convictions on his record and is currently facing his seventh and eighth offenses in Lafayette County Circuit Court.

On April 28, he was arrested on a Class G felony charge of operating while intoxicated after police followed up on a complaint of a possibly intoxicated driver who almost hit another vehicle on County G in rural Belmont. He was released two days later on a $500 cash bond. The case is still pending.

Popp was arrested again Aug. 4 on the same road and for the same charge after he reportedly drove through a stop sign and crashed into a ditch. A $2,000 cash bond was posted on his behalf Aug. 11 and he has an adjourned initial appearance Aug. 31.

Popp's bond conditions include no drinking, bars or liquor stores.

State court records indicate Popp was convicted of his fifth OWI in 1998 and his sixth in 2001, both in Lafayette County. He was sentenced to six months in jail and ordered to pay $5,400 in fines and fees for his most recent conviction.
