MONROE - Beal Street Jazz comes to Monroe Thursday for the fourth of this summer's free Concerts on the Square series.
The performance is slated for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on the north side of the Square. The concerts are sponsored by Monroe Main Street and underwritten with major funding from The Monroe Fund, The Monroe Clinic and Evergreen. Those attending should bring their own lawn chairs.
Beal Street Jazz will entertain the audience with jazz standards and a hint of Dixieland and big band sound. The six-member jazz band has performed for the past six years in the tri-state area. Bandleader Gary Beal and trumpet player Randy Schneeberger have played for 30 years in big bands such as the Dick Jergens Band and performed as far away as New Orleans.
Box lunches will be available at Cafe Claudeen's, Turner Hall, Pancho and Lefty's and the Garden Deli. Ruf's Confectionery will also be open during the concerts.
Special Olympics volunteers will be selling popcorn as a fundraiser.
Beverages will be available at a beer tent sponsored by the Green County Humane Society.
In the event of inclement weather, the concerts will move to either Turner Hall or the Monroe Middle School, both located just two blocks south of the Square. Signs will be posted directing people to either location and announced on WEKZ.
Upcoming concerts include Saxtet Plus Aug. 5, and The Jimmys Aug. 19.
Information is available by calling Karen Stollenwerk, concert chairman, at 328-1767.
