DARLINGTON - The Barn Quilts of Lafayette County project is offering a tour map to help visitors locate the colorful artwork on more than 60 agricultural buildings throughout the county.
Barn quilts are essentially folk art - pieces of plywood painted to resemble a quilt section or "block" and placed together to form an image on the side of farm buildings. Many of the quilts have personal significance to their owners, such as the McQuaid family Irish plaid in Darlington or the Stutenberg family of Cuba City's "American Pride" theme, which honors their son who served in Iraq. Still others use blocks designed by grandparents and relatives.
The map is available at the UW Extension office in Darlington and at area banks, libraries and visitor centers. Organizers are planning a barn quilt tour for sometime next year. For more information or to donate to the project, visit the website at www.barnquiltsoflafayettecounty.com.
