BRODHEAD - A barn and attached shed at W1508 Ten Eyck Road owned by Roberta and Tom Hoesly caught fire around 3 p.m. Tuesday.

The buildings were a total loss.

When Brodhead firefighters arrived at the scene around 3 p.m., they discovered a shed attached to the barn was fully engulfed and the fire had spread to the barn. The barn and shed were about 45 feet wide and 70 feet long.

The Juda and Albany fire departments assisted the Brodhead Fire Department.

A news release issued by the Brodhead Fire Department said about 30 firefighters fought the blaze and had the fire under control in about an hour. Damage was estimated between $20,000 and $30,000.

Firefighters remained at the scene for about six hours to extinguish the fire.

None of the approximately 40 cows in the barn were injured. Neighbors and friends assisted in loading the cows and transporting them to another farm.

The family keeps their dry cows and bred heifers in the building, Roberta Hoesly said.

Janet Zettle, Roberta Hoesly's mother, lives in the house on the farm. She said passing neighbors on their way to Monroe saw smoke and alerted her to the fire.

The Brodhead Fire Department reported there was a family member working at the farm throughout the day and had left about 20 minutes before the fire was reported.

The farm has been in the Zettle family since 1964, Zettle said. The Hoeslys purchased the farm in 2000.
