ALBANY - The cause of a rural fire that destroyed a dairy barn here remained undetermined Sunday.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control after more than 10 hours. Three people were inside the barn when the fire broke out Saturday night, but they escaped unharmed.

"They were milking (in the barn) at the time, when they smelled the smoke," said Albany Fire Chief Danny Mueller, adding that they also were able to get 62 cows to safety.

Albany Fire Department and EMS crews responded to initial reports of the fire at about 8:40 p.m. Saturday on Tower Road.

When emergency crews arrived, the barn was fully engulfed, said EMS President Angie Mueller.

"They got all the animals out at the time, which is the important thing," she said.

The barn is a total loss, according to Mueller, adding that a feed bunk and silo also were damaged.

Firefighters stayed until about 5 a.m. Sunday extinguishing the blaze, he said.
