Baldwin: Palin's no Hillary Clinton

MADISON - Count 2nd District Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin, D-Madison, among those unimpressed with Sen. John McCain's vice presidential pick Friday.

Baldwin said McCain's surprise selection of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his Republican presidential running mate Friday calls into question McCain's leadership and judgment.

"As we face serious global challenges and wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, John McCain has chosen someone with virtually no national security or foreign policy experience," Baldwin said in a news release. "This choice calls into question both Senator McCain's judgment and a McCain administration's ability to lead a nation in crisis."

Palin was introduced Friday at a rally in Dayton, Ohio, as McCain's choice as a vice presidential candidate. She has been governor of Alaska since 2006. Before that, she was mayor of Wasilla, a town of 6,500 north of Anchorage.

Some are portraying McCain's decision to put Palin on the ticket as an attempt to woo Hillary Clinton supporters still bitter that Barack Obama beat her for the Democratic presidential nomination.

If that's the case, Baldwin said, McCain "misjudges the reasons so many voters rallied around (Clinton's) candidacy."

"It was Senator Clinton's experience, skill and commitment to change, especially in the areas of health care and energy policy, that drew such strong support," Baldwin said. "Sarah Palin's opposition to Roe v. Wade and her support of big oil will not draw Democrats from the Obama-Biden ticket."
