MONROE - A five-block segment of the Badger State Trail in Monroe will reopen to public access at 4 p.m. Friday.

The affected area runs from 9th Avenue north to 14th Avenue.

The trail section had been closed since May 11, while the Department of Natural Resources repaired a sinkhole.

"Repairs are essentially completed and the trail surface currently is safe for use. All heavy repair equipment will be removed by Friday and the trail will be open from the Illinois-Wisconsin state line north for all permitted uses," said Steve Johnston, trail manager.

The nearly 33-mile recreational corridor runs from Basco, about five miles south of Verona in Dane County to Clarno in Green County; at the state line it connects with the Jane Addams Trail in Illinois. It offers bicycling and hiking through a scenic, rural landscape.
