MADISON — Rep. Todd Novak (Dodgeville) authored Assembly Bill 390 with Rep. Travis Tranel (Cuba City) and Rep. Tony Kurtz (Wonewoc). The bill directs the Governor to provide grants from the federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) for $4 million to the Memorial Hospital of Lafayette County in Darlington, for $11 million to emergency medical services across the state, and for $400,000 to the city of Reedsburg community center.

“Previously Governor Evers, in a larger more expansive bill, identified all three of these projects for funding. I joined with Reps. Tranel and Kurtz to identify the items directly affecting our southwest Wisconsin districts and had those items included in a standalone bill.” said Novak.

The bill was introduced, received a public hearing, and an affirmative recommendation from the Assembly State Affairs Committee. The bill was placed on the calendar for consideration before the full Assembly. Assembly Bill 390 passed the State Assembly June 22.

“I’ve talked with countless people in Lafayette County about MHLC’s aging building and the importance of finding a solution for the community moving forward. MHLC is the only county funded hospital left in the state of Wisconsin. Leveraging one-time federal funding is uniquely suited for this project. Passing this legislation today gets us one step closer to finding that solution.” said Novak.

Assembly Bill 390 has now been sent to the State Senate for consideration. The bill must pass both chambers in the same form before the Governor can sign the measure into law.
