The Green County Historical Museum has an oil painting by the late Carl Marty, Sr. (1873-1960) entitled "The Lyre Tree." It was painted in 1937 near the Kiwanis Youth Cabin area west of Monroe.
Marty, a native of Switzerland, was a successful cheese firm operator and onetime editor of the Green County Herald. In his long retirement, he became an accomplished painter in oils and a poet. He contributed greatly to the preservation of interest in traditions and art of his native land. Many of his paintings may be found on the walls and rafters of the Turner Hall's Ratskeller. One of his paintings may also be found in the City Hall's Council Chambers.
His paintings ranged from a primitive portrayal of people of old Switzerland and scenes of early cheese factories in the area to more subtle color studies in various landscapes. Marty was the first president of the Green County Historical Society when it was founded in 1937.
