Arti-Facts: 1888 photo of Civil War Veterans Reunion
4764a.jpg
The Green County Historical Museum has a large ornately-framed photograph of a Civil War veterans' reunion of the 5th Wis. Independent Light Artillery Battery held in Monroe in 1888.

This framed photograph was recently refurbished for the Historical Society by the Swiss Attic Fanciers of the Monroe Questers, with matching funds from the Wisconsin State Questers organization.

A brass plate on the bottom identifies the 51 men at the reunion.

The 5th Artillery Battery was formed in October 1861 and served almost four years, mustering out in June 1865. The battery participated in numerous battles.

For a history of the unit, read Nate Roth's book entitled "Farm Boys Artillery Men." Nate's great-grandfather, Fred Block, was a member of the unit.

According to the book, 25 men in the battery lost their lives; Captain Pinney and five other men died of gunshot wounds, and 19 other fatalities came from disease and infection.
