BH open house invites prospective

band members


GRATIOT - The Black Hawk Music Department will host an open house for all fourth-graders interested in joining the band from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 29.

Students interested in joining the band should come with their parents.

Representatives from two music stores will be available to help parents reserve an instrument or have a used one looked over. A select number of school-owned instruments will be available for rent.

Cadiz Springs 'Fling' to feature family games, prizes

BROWNTOWN - The Friends Of Cadiz Springs State Recreation Area group is hosting a Fling Into Summer celebration from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, June 3 at the park, N2241 Cadiz Springs Road.

The first weekend in June is an open house at Wisconsin State Parks and no admission sticker is required.

There will be no charge for the family games, prizes and activities. There will also be a pan fishing contest for kids age 12 and under; children must be accompanied by an adult to participate in the contest. The park also has hiking trails, two lakes and a sandy beach, a volleyball court and picnic areas for family recreation.

Brats and hot dogs, as well as pickles, chips, cold soft drink, and frozen custard from Culver's will be sold. The proceeds will be used to help purchase new playground equipment for the park.

New Glarus

Camping class slated for June 3

NEW GLARUS - "Camping 101," a program that will demonstrate the necessary knowledge and techniques for camping will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, June 3 at the New Glarus Woods State Park.

There will be a presentation on camping, including how to set up a tent in a secure location; safely use cooking equipment; avoid poisonous plants; start and care for a campfire; store food items; and properly maintain a camping site. Table displays will be set up to identify poison ivy, animal tracks and scat, as well as offer information about plants and animals in the park.

The first 75 attendees will receive a free water canteen as an incentive to avoid the use of plastic bottles. Grilled brats will be provided while supplies last. The event is free and will be held in combination with Wisconsin State Park Open House Day during which no entrance fee is required.

The event is sponsored by the Friends of New Glarus Woods State Park and is partially financed by a grant from the New Glarus Community Foundation.

The Friends of New Glarus Woods State Park is a non-profit group that helps promote awareness of the New Glarus Woods, educates all ages about nature and assists in making the woods an exceptional environment for nature and visitors.
