MONROE - Police tactical units took an armed, 22-year-old South Wayne man into custody early Sunday morning, following a car crash and subsequent foot-chase near the area of W7100 County Y in Green County.

A semi-automatic handgun was recovered, and the suspect, Joshua C. Broge, was arrested.

According to a Green County Sheriff's department news release, the ordeal began when deputies were notified, just after 6 a.m., of a motor vehicle crash in the W7100 Block of County Y.

"Deputies responded and discovered that a motor vehicle left the road and entered the private property of a resident in that area, and collided with some cement blocks disabling the vehicle," the statement said.

Deputies on scene searched the area but were unable to locate the driver. However, papers were found in the vehicle identifying a possible driver, police said, and it appeared that he was injured.

Then, at about 7:11 a.m., a citizen in the area reported "seeing a male subject laying in the road with a firearm close to the subject's head..."

As emergency units responded, the suspect, later identified as Joshua C. Broge, "got up and started to walk with the gun down the road, and fled into tall grass alongside the road when emergency sirens approached."

County Y was blocked and a perimeter established. Meanwhile, tactical response teams from the Green County Sheriff's Department, Monroe Police Department and Lafayette County Sheriff's Department responded, along with canine officers from the Green County and Monroe agencies.

Eventually, after announcements over a loudspeaker imploring the suspect to give up, Broge surrendered and was taken into custody. A semi-automatic handgun was found nearby.

Broge was initially charged with Going Armed While Under the Influence of An Intoxicant, and Operating a Motor Vehicle While Under the Influence of an Intoxicant, second offense.

The matter is still under investigation and further charges may result, police added.
