ARGYLE — A woman died in a fire at her Galena Street trailer home in Argyle in the early morning hours of Sept. 25.

Firefighters recovered the body of Samantha Jo Smith, 32, from the residence after the fire was extinguished, according to Argyle Chief of Police Hayley Saalsaa.

A 911 caller at 4:48 a.m. reported seeing flames coming from the mobile home at 400 Galena St., Lot 2. The Argyle Fire Department responded, along with Lafayette County Sheriff's deputies and Argyle police.

Foul play is not suspected at this time, however the origin and cause of the fire remain under investigation, Saalsaa wrote in a news release sent out late Sept. 27.

The Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) and Wisconsin Fire Marshal’s Office also responded to the scene and are assisting in investigation of the fire. Fire marshals, which operate under the state DCI, are routinely called in to investigate fatal fires.

The Fire Marshal's Office has a team on scene and "they also bring in (DCI) agents to help us with securing the scene and interviewing and stuff like that because we're a small department," Saalsaa said.

The presence of DCI is "not at all" an indication that a crime has occurred, she said. She expects a report back from state investigators within about a week.

Smith leaves behind two children, ages 13 and 6, according to an online fundraiser set up to help the family. Learn more by visiting here.
