DARLINGTON — An Argyle 18-year-old is charged with threatening underage students, showing them sexually explicit pictures and threatening to “shoot the school up” on graduation day.
Kyle Lawrence Gilbertson faces two Class I felony counts of exposing a child to harmful material and two misdemeanor counts of unlawful use of a computer with intent to threaten or harm. He signed a $1,000 bond July 22 in Lafayette County Circuit Court and has a preliminary hearing Aug. 26.
Acc-ording to the criminal complaint, three students, ages 17, 15 and 14, told police they were at a baseball game in Argyle on May 13 when Gilbertson approached them and proceeded to show them explicit pictures of underage girls on his phone. The investigation found Gilbertson texted one of the teens later that he was going to beat them up and “shoot the school up” on graduation day, referring to Monroe High School.
When police asked Gilbertson about the comments, he denied making them and said someone made up the rumor and “that is not right for someone to say I’m going to shoot up a school.” He did admit to having explicit pictures on his cellphone but said they were from when he was younger and he had permission from the person in the photos to have them.
In an unrelated case, Monroe police arrested Gilbertson July 18 at the Green County fairgrounds on charges that he started a fight and punched two Monroe 16-year-olds, causing them minor injuries. Formal charges had not yet been filed in Green County Circuit Court as of Gilbertson’s initial appearance in the Lafayette County case.
