ARGYLE - An Argyle man was killed Sunday after his vehicle hit a tree, according to Lafayette County Chief Deputy John Reichling.

Zachary W. Jenkins, 21, was pronounced dead at the scene by Lafayette County Coroner Virginia Douglas, Reichling said.

The accident took place on Spore Road about one mile west of Wisconsin 78 south of Argyle in Argyle township.

Deputies, along with the Argyle Fire Department and Argyle Emergency Medical Services, responded to a report of a crash at about 5:45 a.m.

A passing motorist saw the vehicle in the ditch and drove to an Argyle gas station to report the crash. An employee at the gas station notified the Sheriff's Department.

An investigation showed Jenkins' 2007 Toyota Corolla was eastbound on Spore Road when it crested a hill and failed to negotiate a curve to the left. The vehicle left the road, went into a ditch and hit a tree. Jenkins was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Speed is considered a factor in the crash, Reichling said.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lafayette County Sheriff's Department and the Lafayette County Coroner's Office.

This is Lafayette County's second traffic fatality in 2009, Reichling said.
