ARGYLE - A fight between two Argyle brothers early Sunday landed one brother in jail and the other in a hospital with life-threatening injuries, police say.

Danial D. Saalsaa, 29, is being held at the Lafayette County Jail on a tentative felony charge of aggravated battery.

His brother Aaron D. Saalsaa, 27, was taken by Argyle EMS to Monroe Clinic and then transferred to the University of Wisconsin Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

A representative at the hospital had no updated information Monday morning on his condition.

The incident is being investigated by Monroe police because the brothers are related by marriage to Argyle Police Chief Hayley Saalsaa.

She "was a witness to the altercation as she had been called by family members to respond to the fight," said Scott Pedley, Lafayette County sheriff. Because his department routinely works with her, "the request for outside assistance was necessary ... due to a potential conflict of interest."

According to a preliminary investigation, the brothers were fighting outdoors on North Broad Street. A 911 call requesting an ambulance came at 3:16 a.m. Danial Saalsaa was taken into custody at the scene.

No weapons were used in the incident.

Monroe Police Chief Fred Kelley described the situation as a "tragic result" of a domestic dispute and said the brothers have a history of fighting.

"My understanding is they fight a lot," Kelley said.

Online court records show no prior criminal history for Danial Saalsaa.
