ARGYLE - UW-Madison folklorist Jim Leary will present "Life in Lafayette: Julebukking in Southwest Wisconsin" at 7 p.m. Nov. 16 at Central 52, 300 E. Milwaukee St.
Julebukking or "Christmas fooling" is an old Norwegian custom widely practiced and still remembered in the Argyle area and beyond. A rowdier grown-up version of Halloween, it involved disguises, winter house visits and more.
Leary will offer an illustrated glimpse of this tradition, and invites local julebukkers to share stories, photos and disguises from their own experience.
Leary is a retired professor of folklore and Scandinavian studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His books include "So Ole Says to Lena: Folk Humor of the Upper Midwest."
The Argyle Public Library sponsors the "Life in Lafayette" speaker series to highlight important community topics in Lafayette County and to provide an opportunity to engage with community dialog.
Pizza, ice cream and coffee drinks are available for purchase.
