MONROE - The first snowfall of the season left between 6 and 10 inches of snow on Green and Lafayette counties Friday night and early Saturday.

Road crews were ready for the snow, said Dallas Cecil, Green County highway commissioner. He estimated about 6 inches of snow fell across Green County. Some areas might have received up to 10 inches, he said.

Crews were out at 4 a.m. Saturday to begin clearing the roads. At about noon, crews in Green County were back at the highway shop.

"The state roads are in good condition, and the county roads have a good track on them," Cecil said Saturday.

Highway workers were ready to go back out Saturday night and Sunday morning if they were needed, he said.

Tom Jean, Lafayette County highway commissioner, said up to 9 inches of snow fell in the Belmont area and up to 8 inches of snow fell in Darlington.

He said the crews were out early and remained out until mid-afternoon.

"For the first snow of the season, it was pretty significant," he said.

There were a few cars in ditches. Cecil and Jean both said people likely either stayed home or drove cautiously.

There was at least one crash, however, involving a Lafayette County highway truck. Jean said the Blanchard township road crew borrowed a highway truck and the truck left the road and rolled onto its side early Saturday on North Lake Road. No one was injured in the crash.

The snow may have stopped falling for a few days, but the National Weather Service (NWS) forecast is calling for cold temperatures with highs in the mid-teens during the day and at or below zero degrees at night until Wednesday.

The NWS called for a 30 percent chance of snow Thursday.
