Area schools receive technology funding

MADISON - Several area schools will receive federal money for educational technology projects, according to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction last week.

Albany, Brodhead and Juda schools, along with Clinton, Evansville, Milton and Parkview, will share a $75,000 grant. Black Hawk and Darlington schools will be two of 15 schools that will share a $100,000 grant, according to a statement from the DPI.

Juda Superintendent Gary Scheuerell said the money will be used to help the districts with technology and curriculum. The schools share the money, he said.

"This is good for smaller schools," Scheuerell said. "We can look at ways to work together. This makes technology available for everyone."

Brodhead Superintendent Charles Deery said the money allows teachers to work together to improve curriculum in the classroom. Teachers can work with teachers from other districts to determine the best ways to use the technology to help students in the classroom.

The grants to local schools are part of a $5.2 million grant from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Gov. Jim Doyle said the money will help districts that are facing difficult economic times.

"School budgets are stretched tight across the state, and these grants will help our schools and teachers ensure all our students can compete in the global economy," Doyle said.

State Superintendent Tony Evers said the money will help districts increase student achievement. The grant money will help teachers work together to use technology as an education tool, he said.
