Area jobless rates jump

MADISON - The unemployment rate in Green and Lafayette counties increased in January, accoding to statistics released by the state Department of Workforce Development Wednesday.

Green County's jobless rate increased to almost 10 percent in January settling at 9.8 percent, which was up from 7.8 percent in December. In January 2009, Green County's rate was 8.2 percent.

In Lafayette County, the rate increased to 8.2 percent in January, compared to 6.7 percent in December. The January rate was up over 2009, which was 7.6 percent.

Green County now ranks 53 out of the state's 72 counties in unemployment rate, while Lafayette County stands at 66. In December, Green County ranked 46, while Lafayette County placed 35.

Unemployment is up in all Wisconsin counties and in all of the largest cities, according the Workforce Development Department.

Rusk County had the highest unemployment at 14.3 percent followed by Iron County at 13.8 percent. More than half of the state's counties, 44, had double-digit unemployment for the month.

Beloit had the highest unemployment for any city at 18.3 percent, followed by Racine at 16.4 percent and Manitowoc at 14.4 percent.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for Wisconsin in January was 8.7 percent. The national rate was 9.7 percent.

The local figures released on Wednesday are not seasonally adjusted.
