MONROE - Swine Flu has fallen off the public radar compared to a few months ago, but people still need to be aware of it and take precautions to avoid getting sick, according to local health care officials.
As of July 29, there are three confirmed cases of Swine Flu in Green County, registered nurse Joni Marty of the Green County Health Department said, although she didn't know the date of each confirmed case.
According to www.pandemic.wisconsin.gov, the severity of the illness appears similar to seasonal influenza.
Each year, according to the Web site, influenza causes thousands of people to be hospitalized and is responsible for hundreds of deaths.
"This strain is causing influenza at a time of year when activity normally subsides," the site said.
According to the Web site, there are 47 confirmed cases of Swine Flu in Rock County, and no cases have been confirmed in Lafayette County.
Marty said people still need to take precautions for the illness.
The health department suggests people wash their hands, avoid touching their eyes, nose and mouth to reduce the spread of germs, don't share eating utensils, avoid close contact with sick people and stay home if ill.
People should also contact their doctor if symptoms develop.
Symptoms for swine flu include fever, lethargic behavior, coughing and sore throat. Some people with the illness reported nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
