Aquarium will show ecosystem transformation

BELLEVILLE - Belleville Community Park will feature an aquarium, courtesy of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, at Belleville Lakefest on Sunday, Sept. 1.

Those who attend can get an up-close view of the ecosystem transformation occurring under the surface of Lake Belle View. The aquarium will be stocked with species from Lake Belle View, as well as the Sugar River.

Kurt Welke, Dane County Fisheries manager, will be available from 1 to 1:30 p.m. and from 3 to 3:30 p.m. to answer questions. Kids can also participate in a Fish Identification Raffle with a rod and reel to be awarded at 5:15 p.m. in the Learning Center.

The Snakes Alive! program with Tom Kessenich is set from 11 to 11:45 a.m. Snakes Alive! is a hands-on, educational experience. With a wide variety of live animals, the audience interacts up close and personal to discover firsthand the world of reptiles. Those who attend the event can learn the role of reptiles in nature and caring for them in captivity.

At 12:15 p.m., near Picnic Point, Michelle Veeneman, youth services director at Belleville Public Library, will share stories that amuse, awaken and inspire.

The Critterman Puppet Show will take place from 1 to 1:45 p.m. Kids can also catch bugs and learn more about them with the Upper Sugar River Watershed Association and Wisconsin Department of Resources at 2 p.m.

Picnic food will be available for purchase. The Sugar River Triathlon will begin at 7 a.m. and programming begins at 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. There is no entrance fee.
