MONROE - After a closed session meeting, the Monroe School Board agreed to renew every administrative contract another year except Monroe Middle School Principal Lynne Wheeler's position since she will be retiring at the end of this school year.
Administrators in the district received a 2.06 percent raise last year and a two-year contract that runs through the end of the 2014-15 school year. Monroe School District Superintendent Cory Hirsbrunner said the administrative contracts are being renewed through 2015-16.
"There is no salary information at this time," Hirsbrunner said.
Hirsbrunner said the board will determine later this year what percent of an increase administrators could receive under the renewal.
Monroe School District Business Manager Ron Olson said in September the district saved about $90,000 this year after the board cut the Monroe Middle School assistant principal position last year and named Chris Medenwaldt the new high school principal and Jeriamy Jackson as the new high school assistant principal this year.
School districts across the state have to tender non-renewal notices to administrators five months prior to the end date of a contract. Districts have to notify administrators of contracts being renewed four months before the end of a contract.
Hirsbrunner said the district usually announces the renewal of administrator contracts at the end of February and administrators have until the end of March to approve or reject the renewal.
The district has a $1.71 million deficit this year. The district also has $500,000 in capital projects including the two new chemistry labs at the high school they were planning to pay for through Fund 80, the community service fund. However, the state froze community service funding so the district is planning on using a portion of the $7.3 million in fund balance to cover the costs of the capital projects and deficit.
Teachers in the district received a 2.07 percent total base wage increase this school year. The one-year contract runs from July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014. The total base wage increase in all cells on the salary schedule will allow for step movement and a new base salary of $32,625. It's the first contract for teachers that was negotiated after Gov. Scott Walker signed the Act 10 law that curtailed collective bargaining rights of some government workers. Teacher's unions are only now able to negotiate wages and not language.
Wheeler has been an educator in Monroe for 36 years, including nine years as the middle school principal and 27 years as a special education teacher at the high school. She also served as intern principal at Abraham Lincoln for one semester. Wheeler's last day at the middle school will be June 30.
