Colony Brands began construction this week on a 38,000-square-foot addition to the west side of its Design Center on 8th Street. Included will be a photo studio that will meet about 70 percent of the company's photography needs.

This is the third phase of construction at the former Walmart building, which Colony Brands purchased in February 2013. The company retrofitted the building in the first phase. Then it added a 27,000-square-foot addition on the building's north side for office space for additional merchandising, design, quality assurance and inventory management staff.

About 175 people work at the center. The addition will add office and work space for 75 additional creative staff members, according to John Baumann, president and CEO.

He said the Design Center will allow Colony Brands to better manage and coordinate the development of its 12 e-commerce and catalog brands.

"The completion of phases one and two of our design center have already helped us improve our brand development and design efforts. Very soon we'll be able to better manage our brands from product design and selection all the way to page layout and photography, under one roof," he said.

The addition will increase the building to 163,000 square feet.
