MONROE - Green County residents turned out in droves Saturday morning for the county's annual Breakfast on the Farm.

This year's breakfast, which helps kick off Dairy Month in June, was hosted by Becky Wegmueller and Ashley and Dan Wegmueller at the family dairy farm at W4385 Montgomery Road in rural Monroe. The Wegmueller last hosted the event in 1990.

Many attendees, who numbered in the thousands, had to wait in long lines to get a hot meal. Options included eggs, cheese, sausage and homemade coffeecake, with milk, coffee and orange juice to wash it all down. For dessert there was ice cream made by the Sassy Cow Creamery in Columbus. The largest group of diners sat on rows of picnic tables in a large machine shed.

The event stayed mostly dry but occasional rain led some to seek cover. Yellow school buses transported large parties of people to the farm from Walmart. There were also tractors ferrying groups of about a dozen people around the spacious farm.

For the day, the farm enjoyed the rare occasion of people outnumbering cows. But there were still plenty of the latter, with a petting zoo and calves sleeping in small pods.

Local pilots were on hand, flying their planes over the farm, honoring the family's interest in aviation. Two men donned aviation headsets as they prepared to board a yellow propeller-powered 1930 Waco Taperwing biplane. The plane was soon buzzing overhead, coming in and out of sight against the overcast sky.

Collectors from the area displayed vintage farm equipment and classic cars, including a refurbished 1930 Ford Model A.

The event featured a small cluster of merchants selling spices, jewelry, rubber ducks, Beanie Babies and other wares. It also included live performances by The Matriarchs, an indie folk band from Galena, Illinois, and the First Brigade Band, a Civil War re-enactment band from Brodhead.
