An extra special role for Monroe graduate

MONROE - It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Teresa Sinnett.

The Monroe native was an extra in the Johnny Depp film, "Public Enemies" filmed Wednesday at the Lafayette County Courthouse.

Sinnett, a 2004 Monroe High School graduate, has performed with the Monroe Theatre Guild and in high school plays. This was the first time she was able to be part of a major motion picture.

And it didn't hurt that Johnny Depp is in the movie, she joked.

Sinnett, who lives in Verona, heard there was a need for extras in February and auditioned at the Monona Terrace. Sinnett provided the casting director with a mug shot and then went home and waited to see if they would select her to be part of the movie.

She found out a couple of weeks ago she was selected to be an extra.

Sinnett quickly called her parents, Rose and Dean, to tell them about it.

"I don't think they got a word in when I told them," she laughed. "I was really excited."

Sinnett did her own make-up for the movie, using a guide the movie crew sent her. An Oscar-winning designer created the costume she wore.

"It was exciting to be behind the scenes," Sinnett said. "Everybody was rushing around to get ready."

With people walking around the set dressed in clothing popular 70 years ago and hairstyles worn by people from that time period, Sinnett said it was easy to feel that she was actually in the 1930s.

Sinnett was in the courtroom as the movie crew filmed scenes of the interior of the Courthouse.

And so was Johnny Depp.

"I got to see Johnny Depp. It was exciting," she said. "You never expect to be that close to someone so famous."

Depp, she added, was humble and very friendly with everyone.

Sinnett hopes to see herself in the movie when it's released.

"Hopefully, I'll be in one of the angles," she said.

Sinnett wouldn't say how much she was paid to be an extra in the movie but said the money she received would pay for lunch.

"I would have paid them to let me be in the movie," she joked.

Sinnett doesn't have any immediate plans to be in another movie but said she would definitely jump at the opportunity if one comes along.

"I'd love to do it again," she said. "Even if Johnny Depp isn't in the movie."
