MONROE - Veterans with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, may receive much-needed support for themselves and their families.
The Veterans Administration has announced that ALS will become a presumptive compensable illness for all veterans with 90 days or more of continuous active service in the military.
Veterans are developing ALS in rates markedly higher than the general population. This information is based on a November 2006 report by the National Academy of Sciences' Institute of Medicine (IOM). Benefits may include a monthly disability compensation payment, veterans administration health care and survivor's benefits.
