MONROE - Children and adults can get a hands-on, personal look at agriculture at the Family Farm Adventure during Cheese Days this year.
The Family Farm Adventure will be held throughout Cheese Days on the northwest corner of the Square, in between the Monroe Public Library and the former Becker Leader store. The "Agventure," as it's called, will feature exhibits and fun, hands-on activities highlighting agriculture and its rich local tradition.
The large tent will feature something for the whole family, said Alissa Grenawalt, 4-H and Youth Development agent for Green County. There will be three live dairy calves to pet, and sandboxes full of corn and soybeans for the kids to play in. A display will show youth how they measure up to the size of different farm animals and a special area will be reserved for them to try a pedal tractor.
But adults will also be entertained as they test their ag knowledge by answering questions for the opportunity to win free ice cream from the Ag Chest.
There will also be a putting green and "other interactive, fun things" such as Farm Safety 101, a chance to have your photo taken on a real tractor and an opportunity to show off your own milk mustache, Grenawalt said.
"We're trying to balance it out," Grenawalt said of the mix of activities planned. "It's really geared toward everybody who has an interest in agriculture."
While it's new to Cheese Days, the Family Farm Adventure may look familiar to those who have attended Farm Technology Days. Grenawalt said the Family Farm Adventure has been part of Farm Tech Days the past several years, including last year's event held in Green County. The Cheese Days tent is based on the success of those events.
The Green County Farm Bureau took the lead on bringing the event to Cheese Days, and was awarded grant money from the 2007 Green County Farm Tech Days to host the event.
It will take the place of the Farm and Factory Tours that will no longer be held during Cheese Days.
"The Cheese Days committee thought it (the Family Farm Adventures tent) would be a good substitute," Grenawalt said.
The Family Farm Adventure tent will be open from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and again from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday. It will be closed during the Swiss Colony Cheese Days parade.
