Ag Tourism Education Day to cover safety, trends in ag tourism

PLAIN - The Wisconsin Ag Tourism Association is hosting an Ag Tourism Education Day from noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 20 at the Green Technology Training and Enterprise Center, 1110 Leed Parkway. The event is open to all ag tourism-related businesses in southwest Wisconsin.

A key focus of the day will be farm safety in relation to ag tourism businesses being open to the public - as well as information on the new limited liability law as it applies to ag tourism destinations throughout the state. Additional topics include marketing ag tourism business and tourism trends.

Featured speakers include:

• Rep. Lee Nerison, chair of the Assembly Ag Committee and co-author of the Limited Liability Law Act 269. He will explain what the law means to all ag tourism destinations in Wisconsin. Act 269 compliance signs will also be available for sale at the event.

• Marsha Salzwedel, agricultural youth safety specialist at the National Children's Center for Rural and Agricultural Health and Safety in Marshfield. Her session will be interactive, with discussion and sharing of information. Session content will include the types of activities typically found on ag tourism farms and discussion of the associated safety issues, including how to increase compliance with the new liability law. Participants will be able to share what they "worry about" or "wonder about" regarding guests and safety.

• Lois Federman, director of "Something Special from Wisconsin" with the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, will provide an update on the latest opportunities for ag tourism destinations with DATCP grants and programs.

• Patrick Reinsma, southwest regional tourism specialist at the Department of Tourism, will present marketing opportunities along with tips on customer service and trends in the tourism industry.

• Laura Brown from UW-Extension will share data and studies of tourist trends in the industry and provide insights into what types of opportunities tourists are most interested in.
