MONROE - Micki Duerst, Monticello, felt the bed shaking and heard her jewelry box rattling Wednesday morning when an earthquake shook southern Wisconsin.

"I was sleeping when I felt the bed shaking," she said. "When I woke up, I had to find if it was an earthquake."

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reports that the 4.3-magnitude earthquake hit near Virgil, Ill., about 50 miles northwest of Chicago, at 4 a.m., according to the Associated Press.

The Kane County Sheriff's Department in Illinois received scores of phone calls, but there are no reports of injuries or serious damage.

It wasn't the first time southern Wisconsin felt an earthquake: In April 2008 there was an earthquake near Bellmont, Ill.

On May 6, 1947, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, there was an earthquake south of Milwaukee near the Lake Michigan shore. The quake rattled windows and shook buildings in a 770 square kilometer area.

"There were a few reports of broken windows at Kenosha, and residents of other communities reported that dishes and glasses had fallen from shelves," the USGS reported.

And as the result of an earthquake in Charleston S.C. in 1909, shakes were felt as far away as Beloit, Janesville and Milwaukee.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, there were more than 1,000 earthquakes in the United States within the last week.
