MONROE - Monroe has its first Little Free Library because of the Monroe Omicron Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, an international honorary sorority for women educators, and the 2013 Wisconsin ADK Kathryn Saunders Grant.

The Little Free Library can be found across from Lincoln Park, 1911 15th Ave. The Swiss chalet-style LFL holds 60 to 80 books that children and adults can take and read.

Deb Heitkamp, ADK member and Beloit Turner district librarian, wrote the Kathryn Saunders grant, because she wanted the ADK project to act as a catalyst for positive literacy initiatives in Monroe. The Little Free Library's mission is to promote literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges worldwide and to build a sense of community as people share skills, creativity and wisdom across generations. Alpha Delta Kappa is united in the common goals of educational excellence, altruism and worldwide understanding.

Phyliss Ziegler, ADK member, and her husband, Ervin Ziegler, built and installed the Little Free Library. Monroe Sign Design donated the LFL sign and Gottlieb Brandli Jr. made the Swiss crest to add the final details to the LFL chalet.

Little Free Libraries were created by Todd Bol, of Hudson, as a tribute to his mother who was a book lover and schoolteacher. A Little Free Library is a box full of books where anyone may stop by and pick up a book or two and bring back another book to share.
