MONROE - Active Aging Week is an annual event held Monday, Sept. 23 through Saturday, Sept. 28. The Aging and Disability Resource, Behring Senior Center, Green County YMCA, Azura Memory Care, Green County Health Department, Monroe Clinic, Monroe Manor and Monroe Public Library will host a variety of events.

The week was started by the International Council of Active Aging to give as many older adults as possible the means to experience activities and exercise in a safe, friendly and fun atmosphere. During the week, host organizations provide a variety of free and low-cost activities, such as classes, educational seminars, access to fitness facilities and community events.

The Active Aging Week 2013 theme is "Discover Your Community;" the theme opens the door to discovering new places and friends as well as civic and volunteer opportunities so often made by older adults.

Events include free classes at the YMCA, an exercise sampler at the Behring Senior Center, speakers on the aging brain, memory loss, healthy eating and medications as they relate to falls. Orthostatic blood pressure checks, flu shots, balance tests, and many other options to staying healthy and well will be offered. All activities are free or low cost for seniors.
