A summer adventure

MONTICELLO - At one time almost everyone has dreamed about running away with the circus.

He didn't run away, but Kaleb Fountain has spent the summer working for the carnival.

The 16-year-old from Eagle, Wis. has traveled across the state this summer helping set up carnival rides and games.

"We go all over," he said.

He and the rest of the carnival workers spent a week in Monticello to get everything ready for the village's annual Homecoming celebration. They arrived the Sunday before the Homecoming weekend and planned to have everything packed up and ready to go as soon as the carnival ended. They work most of the day and then stay the night in trailers.

Some of the games take a while to set up, he said. Others take just a short time. The rides takes the longest to set up and workers make sure they're safe before anyone rides them. They also check the rides each day to make sure they're safe.

Fountain said he gets to meet a lot of people wherever he goes.

"That's what I like about this job," he said.

Sometimes he doesn't even know where the carnival goes next.

He just knows that he'll go along with it.
