MONROE - Green County Tourism has created a new brochure to help travelers discover area cheese.

The "Cheese Lover's Guide to Green County Wisconsin" provides history for how and why the area became famous for cheese, as well as raising the profile of local cheesemaking as an important element of Green County's agricultural economy.

A map within the fold-out brochure shows cheese factories where visitors can go to sample, purchase cheese, or see it being made. Profiles for each factory location include historical highlights, varieties produced, and information on the cheesemakers themselves. The map also shows retail outlets offering large selections of locally made cheese. Displayed around the map are colorful cheese labels illustrating the brands and varieties produced in Green County.

A large panel of the brochure is dedicated to discovering the roots of cheesemaking. Mentions include the National Historic Cheesemaking Center and Imobersteg Farmstead Factory in Monroe, the cheese factory replica at the Swiss Historical Village in New Glarus, and the display dedicated to cheese and butter production at the Brodhead Depot Museum.

The Green County Cheese Days Festival is highlighted in a section about celebrating the cheese industry, as well as acknowledgment of the Green County Ag Chest for their contributions in promoting cheese as well as other locally-sourced ag products. The front cover of the brochure shows a smiling Ag Chest dairy princess holding a block of Limburger, a cheese exclusive to Green County.

Also included is a recipe using Feta cheese, and suggestions for pairing local cheese with local brews from Minhas Craft Brewery and New Glarus Brewing Company - both located in Green County.

The new "Cheese Lover's Guide to Green County Wisconsin" was funded in part by the Foreign Type Cheesemakers Association Laboratory in Monroe. More information is available by calling the Green County Tourism office at (888) 222-9111 or visit www.greencounty.org.
