MONROE - By 6 a.m. Saturday there already will be a long line of people waiting to eat breakfast on the farm.
The annual Green County Dairy Breakfast, a fixture in Green County since 1961, takes place Saturday at the Joe Schwarzenberger farm, W3894 Wisconsin 11/81.
About 5,000 people are expected at the breakfast between 6 and 10 a.m.
If this year's breakfast is like previous ones, a couple hundred people will be in line before 6 a.m.
To prepare for the event, more than 200 volunteers spend months organizing, getting enough food to feed thousands.
Much work is done behind the scenes. There are committees to handle parking, food and crafts.
The breakfast brings city and country people together to experience life on a farm.
Local FFA and 4-H groups help set up tents, tables and chairs.
The volunteers prepare for Saturday's breakfast on Thursday by cracking eggs. They plan to crack more on Saturday as needed. The coffee cakes are made a few days before.
According to the Green County Ag Chest Web site, the volunteer cooks will use more than 21,000 eggs, 1,300 pounds of sausage, 5,000 half-pints of milk, 126 gallons of ice cream mix, 3,500 cartons of orange juice, 200 coffee cakes, 110 pounds of butter, 480 pounds of cheese and 26 jars of coffee.
Numerous businesses in the county donate to the breakfast.
Along with the food, the barm also includes arts and crafts, a petting zoo, wagon rides and live entertainment.
The cost of the breakfast is $3.50 for ages 7 to 12 and $5 for ages 12 and up.
