MONROE — A Monticello man was arrested on numerous charges, including first-offense drunken driving, after he reportedly led deputies on an eight-mile pursuit at night with his lights turned off.
Austin S. Kempfer, 20, Monticello, faces a felony charge of knowingly fleeing an officer and a traffic citation for first-offense operating while under the influence of alcohol.
He was also cited for reckless driving endangering safety, unreasonable and imprudent speed, operating left of center, failure to stop at a stop sign, operating a motor vehicle without required lamps lit, violating Absolute Sobriety Law and possession of open intoxicants in a motor vehicle.
At about 3:15 a.m. Saturday, March 7, according to the Green County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy tried to stop a vehicle for operating left of center in the W3800 block of County W, Town of Exeter.
But it sped off and the lights on the vehicle were turned off. The pursuit continued into New Glarus, where the driver failed to stop at a stop sign, and then into Dane County. The driver drove onto private property in the 50 block of Peerless Road near New Glarus and then down a field access drive, where the occupants got out and fled on foot.
The driver, located and identified as Kempfer, was jailed pending court. The Dane County Sheriff’s Office and Belleville Police Department assisted deputies on the case.
