MONROE - The first baby of the new year born in Green County is warmly tucked into her "Winnie the Pooh" bed today. No doubt, a tuft of her thick, dark hair peeks out from the pink and brown blanket.

Ambri Michelle Borgmann, born at 3:04 a.m. Saturday, came about 10 days early, according to first-time parents, Rich and Jessica Borgmann, Freeport. She weighed 6 pounds, 12 ounces.

The Borgmanns had gone to bed early Friday night after a long and exhausting day, but their daughter had other ideas about how to start their new year.

At about 8:30 p.m., Jessica woke Rich to let him know she had to go to the hospital.

"Are you serious?" he said to Jessica Friday.

The Borgmanns arrived at the Monroe Clinic Hospital at about 9 p.m., and contractions kept Jessica awake, although she said she'd fall asleep after each one.

Well after midnight, and the possibility of having a "famous" Jan. 1 birthday, Ambri decided she was ready to face the world and the new year.

Mom and Dad said they have no big future plans for their daughter, yet.

"I'm just excited. I don't know what to do with her yet - she's so little," Jessica said, sitting in her hospital bed Sunday morning.

"First she's going home and she has to meet her puppies. I've been in the hospital long enough," she said, with a laugh.

Waiting to take them home, Rich appeared to be calmly reading "City of Night," Dean Koontz's second book in his "Frankenstein" series.

"Oh, he's been holding her almost the whole time," Jessica said. "She's going to be a handful; he's been spoiling her already. He spoils me."

Rich looked up from his book and shrugged.

"Somebody's got to," he said.

From watching children in the care of her mother, Tina Manns, Jessica is adamant that Ambri is not to be spoiled.

"Ain't happening," she said.

Jessica said everything Ambri needed was waiting for her at home in her "Winnie the Pooh" room with a white crib.

"I was freaking out at four months already," she said, about getting the room ready.

The Borgmanns will be home together for a while. A mason, Rich was recently laid off, and Jessica plans to wait a while until she feels better before finding a job to help with living expenses.
