DARLINGTON - Two men were charged July 15 in connection with a May 9 fight between rival fans at a soccer game played at Darlington Middle School as part of the city's Cinco de Mayo Festival.

William Zayas, 23, Galena, Ill., was charged with felony battery and misdemeanor disorderly conduct.

Jairo Andrade-Aguirre, 32, Darlington, was charged with battery and disorderly conduct, both misdemeanors.

According to police reports, witnesses told officers Aguirre was ejected from the game after he committed an aggressive foul.

Later, Aguirre, whom witnesses reportedly described as a "bully" and someone who picks fights, approached a group of opposing fans and shoved some of them, including Zayas.

Zayas told investigators Aguirre pushed him in the arm and face, and that he punched Aguirre in the face in "self defense," police records indicate.

Zayas also allegedly kicked Aguirre in the face before fleeing, according to a news release issued by the Darlington Police Department June 5.

After speaking with witnesses, officers determined Zayas was the other person involved in the alleged scuffle. They located Zayas, who denied kicking Aguirre, court documents show.

According to court records, Aguirre was unconscious for several minutes before being transported to Memorial Hospital of Lafayette County and then to the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison for surgery.

Police noted in their reports that when they made contact with Aguirre at the hospital, his face was "severely swollen," with his left eye completely shut. He had cuts on his mouth and lips, dried blood on his shirt and smelled of alcohol. His blood-alcohol concentration was reportedly 0.18 percent.

Aquirre suffered multiple facial fractures and a broken tooth, according to the news release.

Court records indicate Zayas signed a $3,000 signature bond July 27 that orders him to have no direct or indirect contact with Aguirre.

Both men have adjourned initial appearances in Lafayette County Circuit Court Aug. 25.
