DARLINGTON - About 24 underage people were cited for drinking at a Main Street residence in Darlington on Saturday night into Sunday morning.

All subjects were cited for underage alcohol consumption and then released to sober adults. Some subjects fled by jumping out of windows, including from the second story window, according to a Darlington Police Department news release. No injuries were reported.

Two young men face charges of hosting an underage alcohol party: Brodie Flannery, 22, Darlington, and Dillon Varner, 23, Blanchardville. Flannery was also cited for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Darlington Police Chief Jason King said he cannot recall an underage drinking party of this size occurring in Darlington in the 21 years he has been on the force.

"We intend to send a very loud and clear message to anyone involved in this case ... that it will not be tolerated," King said.

King said there was an estimated 40 people "crammed" into a two-bedroom apartment on Main Street. Some of the revelers were of-age and not issued citations. He said an officer was patrolling the alleyway behind the residence when a number of young people saw him and ran away, which led him to the party.

The matter remains under investigation and more citations could follow. As of Monday, fines for the citations could exceed $6,300 if all the subjects are convicted.

King also warned that house parties can create serious risks to those involved.

"Underage drinking parties can disturb the peace and can lead to injuries, drug abuse, sexual assault, drunken driving and other undesirable behaviors," King said.

Darlington police, Lafayette County deputies and Shullsburg police assisted at the scene.
