MONROE - Keith Ingwell, Ward 6 alderman for 14 years, announced Tuesday that he would be stepping down from the Common Council effective Jan. 14.
Mayor Bill Ross said he is considering not filing the position by appointment before the municipal election April 5.
"By the time we interviewed candidates, they would have only 60 days" in the seat, he said.
Common Council voted Tuesday to hold a primary election for Ward 6 on Feb. 15, because three candidates, Sara Conway, Darlene Kennison and David Reise, have submitted nomination papers for that ward. A city-wide primary for Justice of the Supreme Court is also expected for that date.
Eight other candidates are poised to run for seats in other wards in municipal elections this April:
Paul Hannes, incumbent, and Brooke J. Bauman for Ward 2.
Jan Lefevre, incumbent, for Ward 4.
Reid Stangel for Ward 8.
Kent Kallembach and Chris Beer for Ward 9.
Charles Schuringa, incumbent, and Tyler Schultz for Ward 10.
All candidates were required to have their nomination papers filed with the city clerk by 5 p.m. Jan. 4. Alderman positions are all two-year terms.
Ingwell and Dan Henke, Ward 8 alderman for 4 years, signed notification of non-candidacy with the city clerk in December.
Council seats in the even numbered wards are up for election this year.
The Ward 9 seat will also be open. Kallembach, currently filling the seat, was appointed to the position following the resignation of Mike Rivers on July 28.
Jan Lefevre, seeking a fourth term, is running unopposed. She was challenged in 2009 by Dan DeMuth. David Riese is serving a three-year term on the Historic Preservation Committee.
Reid Stangel is serving a five-year appointment on the Board of Police and Fire Commissioners.
Schultz finished second in a three-way race for Monroe mayor in 2010. He is serving a three-year term on the Zoning Board of Appeals.
