MONROE - A local cheese company will receive a grant of about $100,000 to expand, according to state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP).

Rod Nilsestuen, DATCP secretary, will visit Maple Leaf Cheese Co-op in rural Monroe at 1:30 p.m. today to present a grant of more than $100,000 to the company.

The money will be used to create jobs and allow the factory to expand. The grant is tied to energy efficiency, according to Nilsestuen spokesman Lee Sensenbrenner.

The grant is to help "strengthen the state's farm economy, which is responsible for $59 billion annually and one in 10 jobs in Wisconsin," according to a DATCP news release.

Master Cheesemaker Jeff Wideman was not available for comment Wednesday.

Maple Leaf Cheese was founded in 1910 by a group of local farmers, according to its Web site, www.wischeese.com.

"Maple Leaf is still locally owned, and some of our farmers are in the second and third generation with us," Wideman said on the company's Web site.
