Ice harvest on Lake Staedtler, Monticello, crica 1910.

This is an ice harvest on Lake Staedtler, Monticello, crica 1910. The lake, now gone, covered nearly 30 acres. Ira “Bum” Pierce had charge of the ice harvest for many years. During a winter thaw, the ice blocks began to melt, becoming honey-combed and were no good, thus became known as “Bum’s Bum Ice.” Ice crops were stored in the ice house to the far left, to be used the following summer in ice in the community.
