An early hotel named the Central Hotel, built in 1878, once occupied this site on Monticello’s Main Street. In 1902, Gottfried and Albert Wittwer purchased the business and built a new brick hotel, renaming it the Grand Central Hotel. Over the years it housed and fed three meals a day to traveling salesmen, single school teachers, traveling shows and other guests. Its ballroom was the center for wedding and anniversary dances, school plays and even basketball games. The hotel burned in the early 1980s and the site is now a parking lot for the Greenwood State Bank.
