An early hotel named the Central Hotel, built in 1878, once occupied this site on Monticello’s Main Street. In 1902, Gottfried and Albert Wittwer purchased the business and built a new brick hotel, renaming it the Grand Central Hotel. Over the years it housed and fed three meals a day to traveling salesmen, single school teachers, traveling shows and other guests.
